Career Trajectory
Bio
Tamas Varga received the Ph.D. degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta.
His postdoctoral work focused on the thermochemistry of negative thermal expansion (NTE) materials and polymer-derived ceramics (PDCs), and high-pressure synthesis and characterization of complex magnetic oxides, superconductors, and multiferroics. He is a Solid-State Chemist who has been conducting research on different complex solid oxides (NTE materials, multiferroics, magnetic materials), and PDCs. During his research, he has extensively used X-ray and neutron radiation to study the structure of matter, as well as thermal analysis, electron microscopy, and physical property (conductivity, magnetism) characterization tools. His work has involved extreme environments, such as heat (e.g., solid-state synthesis and high-temperature calorimetry), and pressure (high-pressure synthesis) for materials synthesis and characterization. His most important accomplishments are his contribution to the understanding of phase transformations in NTE materials, his findings about the energetics of NTE and PDC materials, as well as his work on titanates with potential multiferroic properties. He also did pioneering work involving the simultaneous application of in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction and X-ray absorption spectroscopy for materials studies. Currently, he is a Senior Research Scientist with the Environmental and Molecular Sciences Laboratory, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Richland, WA, performing research on catalysts, multiferroic materials, and other complex oxides using X-ray diffraction and thin-film synthesis.
