Bio
Dr. Arun Devaraj is a Material scientist in the Physical and Computational Sciences Directorate in Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Dr. Devaraj has extensive experience in multiscale characterization of materials from millimeter to angstroms. He has made numerous contributions to understanding microstructure-mechanical property relationships in light weight high strength alloys based on Titanium and Aluminum. Phase transformation of metallic nuclear fuel, specifically UMo alloys during various stages of processing has been another topic where he has made some crucial contributions. His research also focused on understanding neutron irradiation induced microstructural change and the distribution of hydrogen, deuterium and tritium in various components of Tritium producing burnable absorber rods under Tritium science program. He is recognized for his contributions to expanding the application of atom probe tomography (APT) and in correlating APT results with other material characterization methods such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS), focused ion beam (FIB), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), x-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy (XANES), scanning transmission x-ray microscopy (STXM) and in-situ high energy x-ray diffraction (HEXRD) at beamlines of various DOE synchrotron facilities for material characterization. He has been a principle investigator for multiple DOE funded projects and has mentored many students and postdocs in his career. His research interests cuts across materials used for structural applications ranging from automotive applications, nuclear materials and other energy storage and conversion related applications. He has also additionally focused on nanoscale characterization of Li-ion battery electrode materials, catalysts and high strength natural biomaterials. He has published more than 65 peer-reviewed journal publications, including publications in Nature communications and science advances journals. Dr. Devaraj is a steering committee member of international field emission society, leader of microscopy society of America APT focused interest group and guest editor for JOM, Advanced structural and chemical imaging journal and Plos-One.
