He is recognized for his work on applying advanced analytical and in-situ transmission electron microscope methods to study crystallography, structure of surfaces and interfaces, and phase transformations in metals and oxides.
Since joining PNNL, his work has focused predominantly on materials for heterogenous catalysis. Some of his key contributions in this area involve resolving a long-standing issue of crystallographic structure of complex polymorphs of catalytically relevant transition aluminas, as well as resolving the mechanism of their transformations. In addition to catalysis, he works in the area of structural, electronic, radiological, and aerosol materials. He also has a strong interest in development of novel low-dose techniques for electron microscopy imaging and spectroscopy.
Most recently, he developed compressive sensing acquisition techniques and demonstrated its potential for imaging of beam-sensitive materials, which is a key challenge for electron microscopy. He has authored more than 200 publications and has nine patents. He is a member of the Microscopy Society of America and the American Chemical Society.
