Bio
The combination of unconventional research areas such as bone and glucose metabolism, as well as androgens and endocrine diseases are a fruitful cross-over in endocrinology and reveal a considerable number of research ideas and publications. In the last decade, tremendous progress has been made in our understanding of bone biology in the context of related organ systems, such as gonads or glucose control. In particular, the relation between vascular calcification and bone pathobiology has become much clearer. Our investigations range from microRNA and gene expression analyses in tissue and blood to clinical and molecular studies of bone and glucose metabolism, bone and fertility within the context of endocrine regulation, chronic kidney disturbances, and genome-wide association studies of skeletal and endocrine phenotypes. Utilizing our collections of more than 25,000 DNA and serum samples from cohorts of bone, metabolic and endocrine diseases, and the facility of the Biobank Graz, we extend our investigations to microbiomal exposures and extra-glandular steroid hormone productions that might have potential influences on hormonal profiles and might link dietary intake, microbiome and intestinal environment to well-known hormonal diseases such as hyperandrogenism and infertility, hormonal and autoimmune disturbances but also breast and prostate cancer risk as well as and metabolic disorders. The results are likely to open a new perspective for not only diagnostic, but also individual therapeutic aspects in many common hormonal disorders.
