Professor Terhi Piltonen MD, PhD, specialist in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Reproductive Endocrinology and IVF in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, PEDEGO Research Unit, Medical Research Center of Oulu University Hospital, Oulu, Finland. Dr. Piltonen did her post-doctoral training in 2010-2012 with Dr. Linda Giudice, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Reproductive Medicine, UCSF, San Francisco, CA, USA. In her post-doctoral studies, she investigated endometrial abnormalities in PCOS. Today, she has published >100 peer reviewed articles and several book chapters with a research interest focusing on lifelong-health risks in PCOS; mental and metabolic health, fertility and endometrial health and function. Her resent interest has been on PCOS awareness and common guideline development. The epidemiological follow-up studies in women with PCOS base on the Northern Finland Birth Cohort (NFBC66) that includes all individuals born in the Northern Finland area 1966 (12 000 people with >400 women with PCOS identified) and have been followed from gestational week 24 onwards. The team has just finished WENDY-trial (2020-2022) in women born in 1986 (partly linking to NFBC1986). The study includes detailed phenotype of 1918 women in general population, identifying several gynecological and metabolic conditions, including PCOS. Currently the team is also establishing PCOS mouse models to further elucidate metabolic and reproductive aspects in PCOS. Her team also investigates metabolic and inflammatory effects of combined contraceptives, commonly used to treat women with PCOS. As for the endometrial studies, her group manages a large endometrial tissue depository (>500 dated endometrial samples). Dr. Piltonen has been funded by the Academy of Finland, Novo Nordisk, Sigrid Jusélius foundation, EU and pharma. Dr. Piltonen was awarded as the Seth Wichman Young Scientists award in 2015 by the Finnish Gynecology Association and Unto Uotila Young Scientist award in 2016 by the Finnish Endocrine Society. Dr. Piltonen serves currently in the Editorial board of European Journal of Endocrinology and is the president elect in the AE-PCOS Society and scientific board member of the Nordic Federation of Societies in Obstetrics and Gynecology (NFOG)
