- Post-Doc Researcher
REQUIMTE/LAQV - Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto (ISEP), Instituto Politécnico do Porto (IPP)
Porto-Portugal
- Invited Professor (ISEP)
Virgínia Cruz Fernandes has a degree in Chemistry, at the Faculty of Science, University of Porto (FCUP), 2005; Master's degree in Environmental Sciences, from Science School, University of Minho (ECUM), 2008, and obtained a degree of Doctor (PhD) in Chemistry at FCUP, in 2012. During her PhD, she was a visiting scientist in United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) focused in advanced analytical techniques. Between 2013-2015, Virgínia was a Post-Doc researcher (contracted) in national, and international projects and RD&T projects in collaboration with the industry. Since 2016 until now she is Post-Doc researcher in REQUIMTE/LAQV-Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto (ISEP). She published 49 publications in international peer journals (1052 citations giving rise to an H index of 19), 1 book and 8 book chapters. Almost all the scientific journals in which Virgínia has published her research are in the quartile category Q1 (Analytical Chemistry, Food and Technology, Environment and Multidisciplinary category). Virgínia has been involved in 23 R&D projects (Funded by H2020, COST, PRR/EU, EEA grants, IUPAC, FCT and University of PORTO). She is the principal investigator of the project "PLASTOXIC | Microplastics - Toxic Chemicals Occurrence: From The Aquatic Environment Toward Food (Ref. 2022.15094.CBM)" funded by FCT. She is a member of the editorial board of Toxics (MDPI) and a guest editor of 4 special issues in Separations and Toxics MDPI journals. Moreover, she was involved in the organization of 8 events (IYPT Periodic table events, Global Women´s Breakfast, workshops, etc). The research of Virgínia was presented in oral and poster communications at national and international conferences. She has received 11 awards (certificate of scientific merit publications, best posters, travel conference awards). Virgínia has supervised 4 PhD, 21 MSc and 15 BSc and she has given invited lessons in BSc and MSc from ISEP and NMS/UNL. Currently, she is an Invited Professor in ISEP. The combination of several activities (e.g. supervision, teaching, managing, outreach activities, and network) has given Virgínia the opportunity to work in multidisciplinary research teams achieving a high degree of expertise in several scientific fields. Her nuclear scientific area is analytical chemistry namely extraction and analysis of pesticides, microplastics and other chemical contaminants in food, environmental and human samples. Her research addresses all aspects of the analytical process and data processing using many types of analytical techniques applied in novel and useful ways. Her interests also extend to toxicology, human health, and nutrition (http://orcid.org/0000-0003-3979-7523).
