Career Trajectory
Bio
Dr. García-Escudero obtained her PhD degree at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM), under the supervision of Prof. Marta Izquierdo. She worked as a postdoctoral fellow in Prof. Avila’s laboratory, world-renowned Research Professor as a prominent figure in the Neuroscience and Alzheimer’s disease fields. Then, she moved to UAM’s School of Medicine, where she is an Assistant Professor. She is author of 24 accepted publications, 11 of them in the first quartile, among them, 4 in the first decile, 9 as first author and 6 as correspondent author.
Her early work focused on the study of mitophagy induction as a therapeutic approach for cancer treatment. She deeply studied mitophagy induction subsequent to oxidative stress and mitochondrial respiratory chain blockage with the aim of using this strategy to eliminate tumor cells. In her fist years of postdoc at Prof. Avila’s lab she worked under the supervision of Dr. Filip Lim in the neuroregenerative field by exploring the potential of olfactory ensheathing glia in regeneration of spinal cord injury. The work explored the potential of reversible immortalization of neural cells for therapeutic purposes and the generation of patients-derived neural models. Afterwards, Dr. García-Escudero work focused in describing the mitophagy defect found in sporadic and familiar AD patients using human derived peripheral and neuronal cell models and brain samples as well as to stablish the relevance of Tau and APP in mitochondrial recycling pathology. During her research, Dr. García-Escudero also focused her work on describing the role of Tau and its modifications in the physiopathology associated to the AD.
Dr. García-Escudero has a broad background in Molecular Biology and Viral Vectors with application in the fields of autophagy and neuroregeneration and neurodegeneration with several years of experience. Her work has contributed to define the role of mitochondria homeostasis in AD demonstrating that the recycling mechanism of these aged mitochondria is impaired.
