Rob Hummel

Rob Hummel is a co-chair of the Public Programs and Education Subcommittee. Hummel’s career has revolved around cinematography, film labs, film formats, film restoration and archiving, animation, post-production, digital cinema, visual effects, and stereoscopic 3D. He has worked at Disney, DreamWorks, Sony, and Warner Bros., and played a small part in Blade Runner and TRON. In 1999, he led Technicolor’s establishment of some of the first digital cinemas across the globe (screens 13–47, to be precise). At Warner Bros., he oversaw digital restoration work on Gone with the Wind, The Wizard of Oz, and Casablanca, among others. Hummel also spearheaded tests and seminars on the pros and cons of different film formats in the 1990s. Hummel has served for over 15 years on the Academy’s Scientific and Technical Awards Committee. He was the editor of the 8th edition of the American Cinematographer Manual and authored most of that edition’s articles. Currently, he is the president and founder of Group 47, the company behind DOTS archival data storage.
