Bio
Rita Calvário is the Principal Researcher of the project GEAR - Gender Inequalities in Agriculture in the Center of Social Studies (CES) at the University of Coimbra. This project aims at providing a feminist analysis of the gendered power relations in agriculture from the perspective of both women farmers and women farm workers, with Portugal as case study. Previously, she was a Maria Zambrano's Postdoctoral Researcher (grant for the attraction of international talent in Spain) at the prestigious Institute of Environmental Science and Technology, Autonomous University of Barcelona (ICTA-UAB). She is also affiliated in the Barcelona Lab for Urban Environmental Justice and Sustainability (BCNUEJ). In 2016 she concluded her PhD in ICTA-UAB as a fellow of the Marie Curie ITN project "ENTITLE-European Network of Political Ecology". Over the last 5 years, she has led and published research in top-ranked journals with a focus on alternative food networks, agrarian social movements, and food sovereignty, mostly in Southern European countries (Spain, Greece and Portugal). Her research mobilises theory from critical agrarian and peasant studies, critical geography, and political ecology in order to uncover the (re)production of socio-environmental inequalities in food production and rural areas; explain the emergence and understand the dynamics of grassroots food alternatives and peasant and small farmers movements; and discuss resistance and political strategies for building more equal and sustainable food systems and socio-ecologies. Her research is now focused on studying gender inequalities in agriculture and food systems . Her work has been published in Journal of Peasant Studies, Sociologia Ruralis, and Antipode.
