Paula I. Moreira received her PhD in Biomedical Sciences from University of Coimbra, Portugal, in 2007. Currently, she is Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Medicine and Principal Investigator at the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology and Center for Innovative Biomedicine and Biotechnology, University of Coimbra, Portugal. Moreira’s group is interested in elucidating the role of energy metabolism, with an emphasis on mitochondria (energy, homeostasis and signals) and metabolic hormones-mediated signaling pathways in brain changes occurring in metabolic disorders and neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Alzheimer’s disease. Her research group is also interested in clarifying the role of hypoxia and reproductive senescence in the neurodegenerative events that characterize these pathologies. Overall, the research group aims to identify novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets. The therapeutic potential of mitochondrial modulators and drug repurposing are also assessed in the research group. To achieve these goals several experimental models (e.g. isolated mitochondria, in vitro and in vivo models of disease and human samples) are used. Moreira has published more than 200 scientific peer-reviewed articles. She is deputy editor of Journal of Alzheimer's Disease, associate editor of Journal of Alzheimer's Disease Reports and Frontiers of Aging Neuroscience and is in the editorial board of several other scientific journals. Paula Moreira won the Stimulus to Research prize (2003), supported by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the L’Oréal for Women in Science Award (2008) supported by L'Oreal Portugal/UNESCO/ FCT and the Rosalind Franklin Society Special Award in Science (2022), supported by Rosalind Franklin Society and Mary Ann Liebert Inc..
