Laura Silveira-Moriyama

Prof Laura Silveira Moriyama graduated in Medicine and trained in Neurology at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of São Paulo (USP), Brazil. She moved to London to pursue further training in Movement Disorders at the University College London (UCL) Queen Square Institute of Neurology and worked from 2004 to 2011 as a Clinical Research Fellow in Queen Square. In 2009 she completed a PhD under Professor Andrew Lees' supervision on the subject of the smell sense in Parkinson’s disease and published a series of articles about olfaction in neurological diseases. In 2011 she was promoted to Senior Clinical Research Fellow to recognize her supervisory role in the team. Between 2011 and 2014 she supervised two MSc students, and co-cupervised various trainees, including two projects which were funded by Parkinsons UK, and also worked part time at the Teaching Unit at Queen Square, where she is currently an Honorary Clinical Lecturer. She was a visiting (2011-2013) and later honorary (2013 to today) professor at the Neurology department at Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP). Her main interests are the phenomenology of Movement Disorders, including neurogentic conditions, and Olfaction in Neurological Disorders. Her medical degree has been validated in the United States (ECFMG) and United Kingdom (GMC). She has a prolific and consistent scientific production, and she has written various invited articles to international peer-review journals including Neurology, Nature Reviews Neurology, Current Opinion in Neurology, Continuum Neurology, European Journal of Paediatric Neurology, Journal of the Neurological Sciences and Developmental Medicine and Child Neurology. In 2018 UCL named the “Laura Moriyama Prize” to celebrate her role in the creation of the Distance Learning MSc in Clinical Neurology in Queen Square. She is currently the Director of the Movement Disorders Program at UNICAMP, where she also supervises postgraduate students doing research in neurodegenerative disease.
