Her research work covers the whole spectrum of the history of medicine and all time periods. Dr Karamanou has a special research interest in the history of medicine of 18th, 19th and 20th century, as well as, in the history of dermatology and venereology, oncology and cardiovascular medicine. Her research activity is reflected by publications in international peer-review journals (> 250 papers), communications and lectures in Greek and International conferences and book chapters. Part of the research scientific work has received national and international awards.

Assoc. Prof. Karamanou is the President of the Hellenic Department of Balkan Medical Union, an active member of the French Society of History of Medicine, board member of the Extroversion Committee of University of Crete and board member of the Museum of Medicine of University of Crete. Furthermore, she organized/co-organized 17 panhellenic congresses of History of Medicine, 2 international congresses of History of Medicine and a Summer School on Stigma in Medicine at Spinalonga island (7/ 2018).
