At our institute, we investigate the molecular basis of onset and progression of obesity, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. On the one hand, we use experimental mouse genetics to identify novel risk genes, gene/gene and gene/environment interactions. We are particularly interested in the signal transduction of insulin, and how hormone binding results in translocation of the glucose transporter GLUT4 from intracellular vesicles to the plasma membrane. On the other hand, we utilize mass spectroscopy-based proteomics for comprehensive investigation of complex regulatory networks and identification of novel predictive biomarkers for diabetes mellitus and secondary complications.
