Giselle Penton-Rol

Giselle Penton-Rol, medical doctor graduated from Havanaיs Higher Institute of Medical Sciences in 1989. She began her work at the CIGB initially dedicated to the cloning and expression of recombinant proteins, development of monoclonal antibodies and standardization of immunochemical techniques (1989-1994). In 1994, she received her first degree specialist diploma in Clinical Biochemistry and a fellowship at the Mario Negri Institute in Milan, Italy, with Prof. Alberto Mantovani related to the interleukin 1 system and its relation to the chemokines system. She has numerous publications in high-impact journals that were included in her degree as Specialist in Pharmacology/Ph.D. Pharmacological Sciences (1999/2002). From 2003 to 2015, she has worked on the standardization of immunoenzymatic tests and validation of protocols following the guidelines of FDA and EMA in the Division of Clinical Trials of CIGB reaching, in 2004, the title of Second Degree Specialist in Clinical Biochemistry. In 2001, she started working in the molecular characterization of Multiple Sclerosis and Optic Neuromyelitis and in the development of neuroprotective drugs and therapeutic combinations for MS (2003)and stroke (2006), leading both projects and generating two patents where she is the main author. In 2009, in collaboration with the institute Humanitas, Milan, Italy, began to lead the development of a molecule targeting TIR8, one of the receptors of IL-1 for the treatment of inflammation linked to Cancer. In 2013, she reaches the category of Senior Researcher and in 2014 of Full Professor. She has more than forty publications in impact journals and has received two awards from the Cuban Academy of Sciences and Ministry of Public Health. She has been invited as speaker or chairperson in national and international congresses. She is Honorary Member of scientific societies of Immunology and Pharmacology. She is currently Head of the Cell Biology Projects of CIGB.
