Graduated in Biochemistry, from the Biology Faculty of Havana University, Mónica Bequet Romero did her Ph.D. in the field of Molecular, Cellular Biology, and Immunology in 2014. Her works comprise the elucidation of the mechanism related to HPV oncogenes’ induction of VEGF expression, which later led to the design and full-scale evaluation of a VEGF targeted immunotherapy first in the format of a DNA vaccine and more recently in its protein format now known as HEBERSaVax. Expertise areas include Cancer Immunology, Molecular Biology, and Humoral and Cellular response evaluations in multiple species including humans. Her current research interest is mainly focused on the evaluation of HEBER SaVax and its combinations with first-line therapy in cancer patients and relevant pre‐clinical models. Dr. Bequet has authored more than 25 scientific papers in the oncology field, and till 2018 was a post‐doc at the Biomedical Research Division of CIGB in Havana. She is at the moment professor of post-graduate studies on Cancer Immunology, Vaccinology, and Molecular Biology of Cancer for the Faculty of Biology of Havana University and the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB). At CIGB she is involved in the direction and execution of Cancer Immunotherapy projects from the Pharmaceutical Department related to the design and testing of active immunotherapies and also to the discovery and characterization of new nanobodies targeting proangiogenic molecules. Recently was involved in the evaluation of the mechanism underlying treatment options for COVID patients including the therapeutic and prophylactic use of Nasalferon, CIGB-2020, Jusvinza, and from 2020 to 2022 took part in the development and testing of ABDALA COVID vaccine. She had received for these researches multiple Awards of the Cuban Academy of Science and the Medal for inventors from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
