I performed my doctoral thesis (2005-2013, Spain) under the supervision of Prof. Alberto Orfao (USAL). During this period my research was mainly focused on the study of the molecular and cellular causes of the clinical heterogeneity of Systemic Mastocytosis and the development of tools for diagnostic and prognostic stratification of the patients. Additionally, I collaborated in several studies aimed at the study of e.g, the role of immune cell infiltrated in oncological tumors (e.g., meningioma) and the prevalence, progression and impact of monoclonal B cell lymphocytosis in healthy adults. In 2014 I started a postdoc at the ErasmusMC (The Netherlands), with Prof. Jacques van Dongen on the development of a tool for diagnosis/treatment monitoring in oncology, based on the detection of recirculated tissue macrophages. In 2016, I moved with the group to the LUMC (The Netherlands), to support the establishment of an interdepartmental immune-monitoring platform and lead the research line on multi-omics dissection of monocyte/macrophage and dendritic cell maturation pathways within Prof. van Dongen’s TiMaScan ERC Advanced Grant. During this period I also collaborated on several projects, including two EU-funded consortia (Stem cell-based gene therapy for recombination deficient-SCID – RECOMB - and PERISCOPE- PERtussIS COrrelates of Protection Europe) in which I was responsible for the development, validation and implementation of tools for monitoring immune reconstitution post gene therapy and in response to vaccination and challenge with B. pertussis. In 2022 I returned to Prof. Orfao’s group (Spain) to develop a research line aimed at the study of immune responses in infectious diseases and the mechanisms underlying the quality of humoral responses. Briefly, my current research line aims at the study of the mechanisms involved in the generation of good vs. poor quality humoral responses in the context of viral infections (e.g., COVID-19, flu, Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever). I focus on three main aspects: i) impact of the baseline status of the immune system on B cell responses (e.g., age, presence of monoclonal B cell lymphocytosis); ii) how innate and T cell responses, generated during the first stages of the contact with the antigen, modulate B cell responses, and iii) processes involved in the regulation of B cell receptor (BCR) signalling in antigen-specific responses.
