Andrea Scorzoni was born in Bologna, Italy, in 1958. He received the Electronic Engineering degree in 1983 and the Ph.D. degree in 1989 from the University of Bologna. Since 1983 he has been working on various contracts in Bologna at the Laboratory of Chemistry and Technology of Materials for Electronics of CNR (LAMEL, now IMM). At that time his interest was devoted to the reliability of active and passive components, to the measuring procedures and modeling of ohmic contact resistivity for VLSI applications and to a non-conventional use of the scanning electron microscope (capacitive voltage contrast and CMOS sensitivity to the latch-up phenomenon).
In 1988 he became a Research Associate at the CNR-LAMEL and in 1989 he was scientific and financial responsible of the ESPRIT I-SPECTRE (Stategic Project for European cmos Technology Research and Exploitation) European scientific programme for his Institute, contributing to a research on rapid test methods for the evaluation of electromigration susceptibility.
In 1991 he was part of a group whose main task was the design and qualification of a CMOS process. In particular, his interest was devoted to the photolitographic processes and to the definition and use of the test structures for the electrical characterization of the process quality.
From 1992 to 1997 he was responsible of the CNR-LAMEL electromigration team in the framework of the ESPRIT-ADEQUAT (Advanced DEvelopment for QUArter micron cmos Technology) European programme, working mainly on high resolution resistometric methods for electromigration. From 1996 to 1998 he focused his attention on the standardization of test structures and methods to characterize electromigration, in the frame of the SMT-PROPHECY (PROcedures for the early PHase evaluation of reliability of Electronic Components bY development of CECC rules) European programme. Since 1998 he is Associated Professor of Electronics at the University of Perugia, initially at the Department of Electronic and Information Engineering (DIEI) and since January 2014 at the Engineering Department. From 1999 to 2001 he was the Scientific Coordinator of a subtask of the Italian Project MADESS 2 on “Test structures and test procedures for the reliability assessment of a multilevel interconnect ULSI technology with minimum feature size of 0.18 micron”. From 2002 to 2004 he was local responsible of a National (MIUR) project called “Design, development and characterization of a power amplifier for a multistandard transceiver in SiGe technology for the 5-6 GHz band”. From 2002 to 2005 he was also local responsible of a Group 5-INFN project called “Position sensors in silicon carbide (SiCPOS)” with the goal of designing and fabricating a ionizing particle detector in silicon carbide featuring ion implanted junctions. From 2003 to 2005 he was local responsible of a National FISR project titled “Microsystems for environment and agro-food”, where he designed a microcontroller-based microsystem for air quality monitoring operating on an array of gas sensors and featuring a modified IEEE-1451 interface.
From 2003 to 2005 he was local responsible of the MIUR PRIN/COFIN “Design and development of the digital blocks and of the graphical user interface for an electronic biosensor”, based on the capacitive variations induced by the DNA hybridization. From 2006 to 2007 he was local responsible of MIUR PRIN/COFIN called “Design and development of the control electronics and of a software companion for a biosensor realized with a non volatile memory”, where the main interest was focused on the exploitation of EEPROM cells for the measurement of the DNA hybridization. From 2007 to 2009 he was local responsible of the Group 5-INFN project RAPSODIA (Radiation Active Pixel Sensors on Diamond), dedicated to the basic steps for the production of a silicon/diamond sandwich where the diamond can act both as a particle detector and as a biomaterial.
From 2010 to 2012 he was local responsible of the first two years of the Group 5-INFN CHIPSODIA (Chip on Silicon on Diamond), the sequel of RAPSODIA (in 2013 merged into the DiaPix project). From 2013 he is local responsible of the 3-year PRIN/COFIN project called ARTEMIDE (Autonomous Real Time Embedded Multi-analyte Integrated Detection Environment): a Fully Integrated Lab-On-Chip for Early Diagnosis of Viral Infections.
The areas of interest of prof. Andrea Scorzoni include Lab-on-Chip, Smart sensors, Microsensors, Bio-sensors, Brain-computer interfaces, Bioengineering, Silicon-on-Diamond, modelling of electro-thermal systems, microelectronic technologies, design of electronic systems, silicon carbide, reliability and degradation mechanisms of semiconductor devices, electromigration phenomena, ohmic contact resistivity measurements and modeling for both VLSI applications and SiC-based integrated circuits, solid-state, , silicon-based, radiation sensors and gas sensors , organic electronics, Programmable Systems on Chip.
