Dr. Zhanjun Hou received his PhD in molecular biology and biochemistry field in China in 1998. He did his Postdoc training at Wayne State University School of Medicine from 2001 to 2003. In January 2013, he was appointed as Assistant Professor (Research) in the Department of Oncology at the School of Medicine of Wayne State University. He was promoted to Research Associate Professor in 2018. He is also a member of the Molecular Therapeutics (MT) Program of Karmanos Cancer Institute (KCI). His research focuses on discovery and development of novel folate-based therapeutics targeting one-carbon metabolism of ovarian, pancreatic and mesothelioma cancers. His other research interest is on biology of major folate transporters and STING signaling in cancer. Recently, their orphan-drug designation request for a lead compound AGF94 was granted by the US FDA for treatment of mesothelioma, supported by a SBIR grant with him as Co-I. He is PI (with Dr. Larry Matherly) on an ongoing multi-PI R01 and PI on an ongoing R03. He serves as PI (with Dr. Matherly as Co-PI) on a few KCI pilot projects and Foundation grants. Besides, he has been a Co-I on R01s (Dr. Matherly as PI). He has over 50 peer-reviewed publications in national and international journals and has presented nationally and internationally on his work. He serves regularly as reviewer for multiple national and international peer-reviewed journals. On the institutional level, he has served as an ad-hoc reviewer for KCI pilot projects from the MT Program, and he has been poster judge for the Cancer Biology Graduate Program Symposium over years.
