Xavier Gabarrell Durany

Former Director (2018-2022) of ICTA-UAB (María de Maeztu Unit of Excellence -CEX2019-000940-M) (www.icta.cat), ), and member of the Management Board of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), he is Professor in the Department of Chemical, Biological and Environmental Engineering of UAB (www.uab.cat) and researcher at ICTA-UAB. He is the Scientific Coordinator of the SMART-ER in the ECIU University. He leads the research group on Industrial Ecology called Sostenipra (www.sostenipra.cat), and the Fertilecity project (www.fertilecity.com), Integrated rooftop greenhouses: symbiosis of energy, water and CO2 emissions with the building – Towards urban food security in a circular economy. CTM2016-75772-C3-1-R, AI/UE-Feder. He is an expert in Circular economy, urban agriculture, Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), Material Flow Analysis (MFA), industrial ecology and waste management. 28 researchers (19from 2011) have successfully finished and defended a PhD/doctorate thesis under his supervision. In addition to several book chapters, he has more than 200publications in international journals from 2008. Dr Xavier Gabarrell is one of its six guarantors of the ICTA ‘María de Maeztu’ Unit of Excellence accredited as by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness. The award is the highest institutional recognition of scientific research in Spain and confirms ICTA-UAB as a leading research institute focused on environmental science and global change. It is a €2 million grant for the duration of 4 years starting 2016. He is included in the Reuters list of the world’s top 1000 climate scientists according to how influential they are.
