Microbiome -Vandana Sharma studies sugar mediated effects on gut microbiome in reducing diet-induced obesity using metabolic analysis, metagenomics (16S), transcriptomics (NGS) and anaerobic culturing. Screens plant polysaccharides and medicinal herbs to understand prebiotics-probiotics relationship with an aim to develop microbial based therapeutics to improve treatment outcome for obesity, diabetes and cancer. Genetic Disorders -Worked on several aspects of rare genetic disorders known as Congenital Disorders of Glycosylation (CDG) due to impaired carbohydrate metabolism/ glycosylation. Devised therapeutic strategies for CDG-Ia patients. Developed cell based assays, screened small molecule inhibitors of Phosphomannose Isomerase to modulate metabolic flux, tested proof-of-principle.
