Umberto Benedetto

I have completed my PhD at Sapienza University in Rome and then moved to United Kingdom where I completed my surgical training in Cambridge (Papworth NHS foundation trust), London (Brompton and Harefield Hospital) and Oxford (John Radcliff). I have been appointed as consultant heart surgeon at Oxford University Hospital in 2015 and then moved to University of Bristol in 2015 where I have been promoted to Full Professor in 2019. For my clinical and academic achievements at the Bristol Heart Institute, I have been awarded a Nationale Clinical Excellence Award (ACCEA). I have also been nominated Deputy Clinical Audit Lead for Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland (SCTS) . Since 2021 I am Full Professor and Chief of Cardiac Surgery Department at University G. d'Annunzio in Italy. I perform the entire spectrum of adult cardiac operations including complex aortic surgery (FET), complex post endocardititis reconstruction (UFO and Ozaki), off-pump coronary surgery and minimally invasive coronary and valve surgery via mini-thoracotomy. Research I have been award £ 1.3 milion from the National Health Reseach Institute (NIHR) to conduct a study on the neuroprotective effect of CO2 during open heart surgery. Moreover I ahve received £ 250.000 from the Alan Turing Institute to investigate the role of Artificial Intelligence on Risk prediction in Cardiac Surgery. Overall, I have co-authored 291 peer-reviewed articles (H index 52 GS, 46 Scopus) with over 15.000 citations, including recent guidelines on revascularization for the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), European Association of Cardiothoracic Surgeons (EACTS) and American Association for Thoracic Surgety (AATS). I have been associate statistical edidot for the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascualr Surgery (JTCVS). My top 5 publications are 1.
