Tom Downar is a Senior Nuclear Consultant at Talisman. He is currently a Professor of Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences at the University of Michigan and has also served on the faculty at several other prestigious universities in the United States. The primary focus of his research is reactor physics and advanced computational methods in support of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), as well as several other sponsors.
Dr. Downar has extensive experience in computational nuclear reactor physics and the development of coupled neutronics and thermal-hydraulics methods for power reactor safety analysis. Applications include the transient analysis of a wide range of reactor types, including light water, heavy water, high temperature gas, and sodium cooled reactors. Principal sponsors include the NRC, DOE, and EPRI.
He has a Ph.D. and M.S. in Nuclear Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a B.S. in Applied Science Engineering from the U.S. Military Academy, West Point.
