Professor Theodoros Kyprianou is a consultant clinician, researcher, teacher and mentor in the fields of Respiratory and Intensive Care Medicine with special interest in Health Informatics and Technology, Data Science applied in Intensive Care Medicine, Chronic Respiratory Failure, Sleep and Home Ventilation. He is currently serving as Professor of Medicine at the University of Nicosia Medical School in Cyprus and as a consultant physician (part-time) at Princess Royal University Hospital, King’s College NHS Trust in London, UK. He is also the coordinator of the national electronic healthcare record project on behalf of the e-Health Authority of Cyprus (NEHA), and an adviser for European Health Data Space Joint actions. He has held leadership positions at the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine and several scientific committees of EU-funded flagship research programs, being member of the H2020 SC1 program standing committee in Brussels (2012 - 2020). He has also led / served as member of ad-hoc review panels for the EU COST program (last in Feb 2022). Prof Kyprianou has worked extensively in Greece, Cyprus, England and Northern Ireland. He operates internationally within a scientific network that extends from basic to clinical sciences and health informatics while he has been invited speaker at medical and scientific conferences around the world. He serves / has served in the boards of ideation.AI, a start-up developing health analytics solutions (Chief Medical Officer) and NGO - Intensive Care Forum (Deputy Chair). Academic clinician and educator: Prof Kyprianou returned to Cyprus to pursue his vision of establishing the status of Intensive Care speciality in the nation in 2001. He has been the founding Head of the Department of Intensive Care at the Nicosia General Hospital for more than a decade (2006-2018). His department was the first closed-type ICU in the largest hospital in the country. Under his leadership it was established as a medical centre of excellence in Europe, affiliated with Medical Schools, accredited for pre-graduate and professional (fellowship) training and hosted many international R&D programs. He was also part of the inaugural team of physicians and scientists to establish the first Medical School in Cyprus (St Georges Univ. of London MBBS-4 program delivered at the Univ. of Nicosia Medical School). As senior lecturer (2010, dual appointment in both institutions) he created and led the clinical skills lab and subsequently the Critical Care, Anaesthesia & Emergency Medicine clinical training. In 2013, upon completion of 20 years of medical practice, he was ranked as Associate Professor and since May 2022 he has been promoted to Professor of Medicine (clinical track). He was also instrumental in organising and running (academic board) the MSc program in Applied Health Informatics & Telemedicine at the Open University of Cyprus. Research & Innovation: Prof Kyprianou has served as the principal investigator in several research programs, both national and EU funded, raising more than 3.500.000 euros for the hosting Institutions. He has published and presented a number of scientific articles & abstracts in the fields of ICU bio-signals and data management, intensive care education & training, and critical illness pathophysiology. He has given over 60 invited lectures in International Congresses in more than 10 countries over the last 10 years. He served as deputy chair of the Committee for Bioethics Assessment of biomedical and clinical research in Cyprus. He also served the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine as National Coordinator for the development of the European curriculum for training in Intensive Care Medicine; Chair of Technology Assessment & Health Informatics Working Group (until 2018); and deputy chair of the e-Learning Committee (until 2019).
