The first research theme focuses on ‘Smart Technologies, Communities, Cities and Urbanism’. In this stream of research, he examines the disruptive effects, along with the beneficial impacts, of urban technologies and digital transformation of urban services and infrastructures on our cities and societies. His research in this theme covers, but not limited to, the following topics: Smart urban technology; Smart city; Smart community; Smart precinct; Smart urbanism; Smart mobility (e.g., autonomous driving, mobility-as-a-service); Citizen science (e.g., crowdsourcing, volunteered geographic information); Artificial intelligence; Gamification and gamified applications.
The second research theme focuses on ‘Knowledge-Based Development of Cities and Innovation Districts’. In this stream of research, he scrutinises the impacts of global knowledge and innovation economy on our cities and societies, along with developing strategies for space and place making for knowledge-based activities in cities. His research in this theme covers, but not limited to, the following topics: Knowledge-based urban and regional development; Knowledge and innovation economy; Knowledge industry, business and worker; Urban innovation system; Urban knowledge and innovation space; Innovation district; Place making and branding.
The third research theme focuses on ‘Sustainable and Resilient Cities, Communities and Urban Ecosystems’. In this stream of research, he explores existing and prospective urban and environmental dynamics and challenges to determine strategies for planning and designing sustainable, resilient, responsive and liveable natural and built urban environments. His research in this theme covers, but not limited to, the following topics: Sustainable urban and infrastructure development; Sustainable transport; Urban and environmental sustainability performance assessment; Water sensitive urban design; Zero waste; Climate change; Urban heat island; Post-Anthropocentric urbanism.
