Tohru Sawada

Tohru Sawada received the M.D. degree from the School of Medicine, Keio University, Tokyo, Japan, in 1961 and the Ph.D. degree from Keio University in 1970. He is currently the Director of the Department of Rehabilitation, Aino Hospital, Osaka, Japan, and a Visiting Professor of Neurology both at the School of Medicine, Keio University, and at Suchou Medical College, Suchou, China. He started clinical practice as a Neurologist, as well as research work in the field of cerebral circulation at Department of Internal Medicine, Keio University Hospital, in 1962, and spent almost two years (from 1966 to 1967) at the Department of Neurology, Wayne State University, Detroit, MI. He became an Associate Professor of Neurology at the School of Medicine, Kitasato University, Kanagawa, Japan, in 1971, and moved to the National Cardiovascular Center to take charge of Cerebrovascular Division in 1977. He was nominated as the Executive Director of BF Research Institute in 1997 and took charge of whole research work performed in the institute from 1997 to 2004. He has published various medical papers related to cerebrovascular diseases, cerebral circulation, higher cortical functions, and dementia, Dr. Sawada has been an Editorial Board Member of international journals such as Cerebrovascular Diseases, “ Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders, and Japanese Stroke Journal. He is presently a member of the steering committee of the Japanese Stroke Society, and an Emeritus Member of the Japanese Society of Cerebral Circulation and Metabolism. He is also one of council members of the Japanese Society of Neurology and Stroke Division of American Heart Association.
