(member since 1981), Mathematical Association of America (member since 1982), The New York Academy of Sciences (elected in 1985), Sigma Xi (scientific research society, elected in 1985), American Men and Women of Science (elected in 1990), IAEA Nuclear Fusion Prize (2008), Citation: For the "Suppression of large edge localized modes with edge resonant magnetic fields in high confinement DIII-D plasmas", these outstanding results show that edge localized mode (ELM) suppression is possible without H-mode confinement reduction. A set of resonant magnetic field perturbation coils makes it possible to suppress large amplitude ELMs. Such coils have been the subject of much discussion for the ITER team and the teams of many international devices, American Physical Society Fellowship, APS Fellow (2009), American Physical Society John Dawson Award for Excellence in Plasma Physics Research (2018)
