Research has focussed on understanding the nature of the Earth’s lithosphere, integrating information across the boundaries of geochemistry, geophysics, petrophysics and tectonics. Outcomes include new insights into the geochemical and physical nature of the lithospheric mantle, its major boundaries and its evolution through time; the nature and origin and ascent of fluids from the mantle; and the significance of these for global processes such as continental accretion and deep mantle convection, the thermal structure of continents and the fundamental processes that have shaped lithosphere domains in space and time. Technology development, targeted to answer important research questions and active ongoing collaboration with industry partners for strategic research, has underpinned the fundamental science and contributed to a new framework for mineral exploration targeting.
