S. E. La Fleur

Susanne la Fleur obtained her PhD degree at the Netherlands Institute for Brain Research and the University of Amsterdam with Andries Kalsbeek and Ruud Buijs. She carried out postdoctoral research at the Department of Physiology of the University California San Francisco, USA and the Rudolf Magnus Insitute for Neuroscience in Utrecht, the Netherlands. In 2008, she joined the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism of the Academic Medical Center, where she is currently appointed as an Associate Professor of Translational Neuroendocrinology. Her research focuses on understanding 1) how nutrients affect the brain and how these changes mediate the overeating as observed in obese people, and 2) how changes in the brain, occuring with obesity or due to overeating, are involved in mediating type 2 diabetes mellitus. These research questions are studied with a translational multidisciplinary approach using both diet-induced obese animals and human experimental studies. Her work was published in leading journals such as Proceeding of the National Academy of Sciences, Molecular Psychiatry, Molecular Metabolism, Diabetes and Hepatology, and she contributed to ideas and overviews presented in Annual Review of Nutrition, Trends in Pharmacological Science, Trends in Endocrinology and Metabolism, and Progress in Neurobiology. Susanne la Fleur is a recipient of the Novo Nordisk Award for Endocrinology, and the Alan N. Epstein Research Award of the Society for the Study of Ingestive behavior.
