Career Trajectory
Bio
S. Joseph Munchak received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in meteorology from The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA, USA, in 2006, and the Ph.D. degree in atmospheric science from Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO, USA, in 2010.
He was a Research Associate and an Assistant Research Scientist with College Park’s Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center, University of Maryland, College Park, MD, USA, from 2010 to 2015, when he took his current position as a Research Meteorologist at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. He has been involved in current and past research investigations, including the development of 3-D inversion methods, optimal parameterizations of rain and snow particle size distributions, development of clear-air retrievals for precipitation detection, and surface characterization for active and passive sensors. His main research interests are in the integration of passive and active microwave measurements to improve retrievals of clouds and precipitation.
Dr. Munchak is a member of the American Meteorological Society and the American Geophysical Union. He is currently a Deputy Project Scientist for Ground Validation for NASA’s Global Precipitation Measurement Mission and serves as an Associate Editor for Atmospheric Measurement Techniques.
