Stanley J. Robboy, MD, FCAP, the immediate past-president of the College of American Pathologists, is a professor and vice chairman in the Department of Pathology and a professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. Dr. Robboy was the senior editor of Robboy’s Pathology of the Female Reproductive Tract. He trained at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, becoming an attending pathologist there and also associate professor at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Robboy is a well-known lecturer in gynecologic pathology. He pioneered the unraveling of the story of DES (diethylstilbestrol), a drug administered during the 1940s and 1950s to women with high-risk pregnancy; a small percentage of the exposed daughters developed vaginal cancer several decades later. Dr. Robboy has published more than 300 peer-reviewed publications, including a series on the creation of the original, fully developed anatomic pathology computer system for accessioning, reporting, data-mining, and interacting with other computer systems (CAPER System) — long before the start of the PC industry. Additional sentinel works he authored include the major clinicopathologic analyses disseminated intravascular coagulation, biology of glial implants in the peritoneum, comprehensive analyses about malignant struma ovarii, and carcinoid tumors metastatic to be ovary or when primary, be they insular, trabecular, or admixed with struma ovarii or some other variant.
