Shyam coordinates the intercalating BSc in Global Health (iBSc GH) course for medical students at Imperial College London. Within the course, he leads the Science in Context module, which is mainly the Community Group Placements at the local community-based organisations for self-directed experiential learning of global health issues faced by communities within London.
Shyam received his MBBS from Tianjin Medical University, China and his Doctor of Medicine (MD) in Community Medicine & Tropical Diseases from Nepal. Shyam has a Master of Public Health from the Royal Tropical Institute, Netherlands, where he researched the motivations of medical students to work in rural areas after graduation.
Before joining Imperial, Shyam had been working in academic roles (Associate/Assistant Professor) at the BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Nepal, teaching medical, dental, nursing and public health students at undergraduate/postgraduate levels including Master of Public Health course between 2012 till 2019. Shyam has experiences in leading teaching/research for medical students in community settings as family health exercises and community diagnosis programs. Shyam was instrumental in starting and coordinating 2 weeks-Global Medicine Course for the medical and nursing students of Uppsala University, Sweden in Nepal.
As a clinician, Shyam has experiences working as a Primary care doctor for the Bhutanese Refugees in Nepal and a community physician in rural areas of eastern Nepal. Shyam has research experiences in different areas of public health mostly focusing on low- and middle-income countries. He has contributed as a consultant in Nepal for evaluating the Tobacco Control policies and MPOWER package of WHO in the Southeast Asia region in 2017. Shyam also has experience as a guest lecturer in Indonesia, facilitator in sessions for health literacy in the SDG era for the Southeast Asia region of WHO and speaker in public health seminars/workshops for different organisations. Shyam also successfully co-led the local production and promotion of the reusable sanitary napkins initiative for women and girls affected by the massive earthquake of 2015 in Nepal.
His research interests/involvements include:
Health literacy as a tool to address health inequities in populations,
Health promotion for the control of non-communicable diseases, especially tobacco control,
Reproductive, maternal, child and neonatal health in low resource settings,
Health systems research focusing on low- and middle-income countries.
Shyam is also currently affiliated with the Public Library of Science (PLoS) One journal as Academic Editor and BMC Women’s Health journal as Associate Editor.
