Serge Alexis Kamgang

Dr Serge Alexis KAMGANG ( Whitley Award winner 2023), specializes in biodiversity conservation and capacity building in Central and West Africa. With an interdisciplinary background in conservation science, he has focused on great ape and carnivore ecology, human-wildlife conflict, protected and conserved area management, sustainable development and educational development. He has nearly 15 years of experience in the management of protected areas including biosphere reserves and other effective conservation measures. His career is a mix of science and action, reflecting a combination of academic skills and cross-cultural networking, communication, leadership and management. For more than 8 years, he has been working on the ecology of chimpanzees in the Mbam-et-Djerem National Park, and the conservation of lions, in particular in the North, the Far North and recently in the Center regions of of Cameroon. Currently resource person at the Wildlife School of Garoua (Cameroon), affiliated with the Laboratory of Applied Ecology of the University of Abomey-Calavi (Benin), holder of the "Ecotourism and Hunting Safari" Chair at ERAIFT / UNESCO ; University of Kinshasa (DR Congo), he is a member of several scientific groups including: the IUCN Great Apes Specialists Group, the African Lions Working Group, the IMET BIOPAMA coach, Primate Watch Central Africa and the IUCN World Commission on Protected and Conserved Areas. Serge is the author of a few scientific publications, co-author of the book "State of Central African Protected Areas” 2020 edition, and has supervised more than 500 wildlife specialists / protected area experts across Africa and Europe.
