Hey, my name is Savannah, and I am a PhD within the Tjalkens Lab at Colorado State University and focus on glial reactivity that leads to Parkinson's Disease (PD) onset resulting in neurodegeneration within the basal midbrain. I have optimized and pioneered a novel murine modeling systems demonstrating PD onset through pesticide exposure. More recently, I have switched gears and also do research within BSL-3 containment looking into therapeutic targets against host inflammation caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection. In addition, I have investigated the potential neurological deficits that may result from longstanding CNS involvement of this virus. I also work on identification, characterization and targeting mechanisms within equine medicine regarding neurological disorders produced by viral insults.
I am extremely passionate about the research that I conduct and strive to form long lasting bonds with collaborators, colleagues and students throughout the course of studies. I graduated with my Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Immunology, and Pathology and have a deep love for the world of microbes that is unable to be seen by the naked eye.
