Sonia Guerra-Gomes

Sónia Guerra-Gomes is graduated in Biology (2011) by the University of Aveiro and Master in Biochemistry (2013) by the University of Porto. Sónia is currently a PhD Student at the Life and Health Sciences Research Institute (ICVS), University of Minho under the supervision of Dr. João Filipe Oliveira. Sónia started her research work in the Neuroscience laboratory of the Center for Cell Biology (University of Aveiro), where she was awarded with an Integration into Research Grant to study the molecular basis of Alzheimer’s disease, through cell culture and proteomics techniques. In 2010, Sónia started a Professional Traineeship at the Laboratory of Pharmacology and Neurobiology from ICBAS - University of Porto. Here, she worked in the implementation and optimization of the Western blot technique in order to evaluate the expression of purinergic receptors in human brain samples from controls and patients with pharmacoresistant epilepsy. Sónia Guerra-Gomes master's thesis focused on the role of adenosine A2A receptors in the regulation of both immune and neuronal responses in rats with Experimental Autoimmune Myasthenia gravis (EAMG). Sónia is currently interested in broadening her view of the brain function, on the role of glial cells and their interaction with neurons in health and disease by performing behavior tests to assess brain function and by using her previously acquired expertise to disclose molecular correlates.
