Presently the main focus of his research is in the application of radiogenic isotope analysis, in combination with other mineralogical, petrological and geochemical data, to explore the record of Earth processes preserved in geological materials, the pre-eruptive mechanism in volcanology, and the Food territorial authenticity using the geological record (e.g., wines and extra-virgin olive oil). Most of his research activity involved the investigation of volcanic rocks and their rock-forming minerals beside interdisciplinary projects in archaeometry, food chemistry, and biological sciences.

Professor Conticelli has served or currently serves as Editor in Chief and Associate Editor, respectively, and as peer reviewer of first rank International Scientific Journals. He was awarded of two prizes for the quality of his scientific research by the Italian Mineralogical Society (Bianchi prize) and Lincei Science Academy (Tartufari prize), respectively.

Presently he is the President of the Italian Geological Society, and member of the Geochemical Society and of other national and international scientific associations.
