Ian is a career trialist who specialises in the design, conduct, analysis and reporting of pragmatic randomised trials to evaluate complex interventions. He was an early protagonist of patient-reported outcome measures and systematic reviews to aggregate the findings of trials. He has founded, or laid foundations for, Clinical Trials Units in Newcastle, Aberdeen, Cardiff, York, Bangor & Swansea.
