Diabetes is a metabolic disease caused by the deficiency of pancreatic beta cells in producing and/or secreting insulin. In parallel, pancreatic alpha cells secrete more glucagon, exacerbating hyperglycemia. We are studying glucagon secretion to find new ways to treat diabetes. We recently described the expression of PEPCK-C in alpha cells. We are working to understand its function, under the hypothesis that it modulates glucagon secretion, contributing to diabetic hyperglucagonemia.
