I combine a strong scientific background with technical experience to understand the evolution of natural and synthetic products by getting full information on the morphological, structural and chemical specie investigations ranging from micrometric to nanometric scale.
Main scientific achievements have been gained concerning following topics:
• Digital image processing techniques encompasses a wide and varied field of applications from medical to industrial and ecological sectors, depending on the radiation source used, ranging from gamma rays (highest energy) to the radio waves (lowest energy). In our Lab, electron and optical microscopy investigations have been exploited for developing automated methods for quantitative image analysis (QIA) that represents a wealth of opportunities for analysis and measure of complex biological and synthetic systems.
• Morphological and structural investigations on the self-assembling evolution have been performed on natural fibers, biological aggregates, noble metal-carbon and noble metal-organic nanomaterials by combining different electron microscopy techniques: variable pressure scanning electron microscopy (VP-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), dark field microscopy (DF), and quantitative imaging analyses (QIA). These works have been fruitful to establish the necessary informations to customize the product and process design methodologies by tailoring their chemical-physic properties useful for industrial applications such as: photo-bactericidal activity, biosensor development, memory systems, photovoltaic, chiroptical and nanomedicine devices.
Furthermore, these achievements have been provided remarkable informations on natural mineral fiber and on biological tissues to evaluate the toxicity and carcinogenic effects for potential damage of human lung tissues, and the morpho-structural modification of several mammalian tissues related to the biochemical and biophysical alteration effects.
• Determinations of low dimensional hetero-structures constituted of both metallic and organic species at dimensional scale under about 5 nm using non-conventional x-ray diffraction EDXD (Energy Dispersive X-ray Diffraction) and conventional X-ray diffraction techniques supported by theoretical simulations. These scientific investigations have been focused on structural characterizations of metachromatic dyes, metallic-organic oligomers, organic polymers, noble metallic nanoparticles, and carbon based nanomaterials. These works have been fruitful to establish the necessary informations for process design methodologies to tailor their chemical-physic properties for industrial applications such as: photo-bactericidal activity, biosensor development, memory systems, photovoltaic, chiroptical and nanomedicine devices.
• One more major accomplishment of morpho-structural investigation was to employ different characterization techniques in a synergic manner for determining the self-assembling behaviour of amorphous multi-property hybrid nanomaterials, as optical-magnetic paint (dyes). By combining Transmission Electron Microscopy and non-conventional x-ray diffraction EDXD techniques, we were able for the first time to determine the self-assembling behaviour of a new metal-organic ferromagnetic dyes in amorphous solid states useful to enhance the performance of nano-device for industrial applications.
