Ophthalmic pathology encompasses the pathology of the eyelids, conjunctiva, eyeball and orbit. The section of Ophthalmic pathology of the department of Pathology of the Erasmus MC started in 1950 with Prof. Willem Manschot who was succeeded in 1989 until 2012 by Dr. Cornelia M. Mooy. Prof. Dr. Manschot was a founding member and president of the European Ophthalmic Pathology Society (EOPS). Dr. Mooy served as secretary of the EOPS. Dr. Mooy provided my training in Ophthalmic Pathology from 2007-2012. The laboratory receives material from the department of Ophthalmology and from the Rotterdam Eye Hospital, both tertiairy referral clinics. I serve as national reference pathologist in ophthalmic pathology. Monthly ophthalmic pathology meetings provide optimal clinical-pathologic correlation and serve in the education of trainees both in ophthalmology and pathology.
