Rita Maccario

Rita Maccario is a Biologist who retired as a Senior Researcher in Immunology at Policlinico San Matteo IRCCS Foundation, Pavia, Italy. She is currently collaborating with the Scientific Direction of the Institution – Scientific Director Prof Vittorio Bellotti. She has co-authored about 190 scientific publications in the fields of cellular and humoral immunology, primary immunodeficiencies, haematopoietic stem and progenitor cell transplantation (HSCT), anti-tumour and anti-virus immunosurveillance in transplanted patients, adoptive somatic cell therapy with ATMP in immunocompromised patients. She is currently Associate Editor with Alloimmunity and Transplantation a speciality section of Frontiers in Immunology. She started her scientific career in 1975 at the Laboratory of Immunology of the Department of Paediatrics, University of Pavia/Policlinico San Matteo, Pavia, Italy working under the mentorship of Prof Alberto G Ugazio and Prof G Roberto Burgio. 1982-1983: Laboratory of Cellular Immunology – Director Prof Osias Stutman, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York – USA. 1981-1998: Researcher University of Pavia at the Laboratory of Immunology of the Department of Paediatrics Policlinico San Matteo, Pavia, Italy. 1998-2007: Responsible for the diagnostic activity and coordinator of the research activity, Laboratory of Transplant Immunology, Unit of Paediatric Oncology/Haematology – Director Prof Franco Locatelli, Policlinico San Matteo IRCCS Foundation, Pavia, Italy. 2007-2016: Qualified Person (QP) and Director of the GMP facility “Cell Factory” specialised in the production and QC of ATMP, particularly anti-leukemia CTL, virus-specific CTL, MSC, at Policlinico San Matteo IRCCS Foundation, Pavia, Italy. 2019-2023: Member of Bioethics Committee as expert of experimental Cell Therapy, at Policlinico San Matteo IRCCS Foundation, Pavia, Italy.
