Career Trajectory
Bio
Rick Harkewicz tried his hand at songwriting in the 1970s, but success didn’t materialize. Some 40 years later, however, the lyrics suddenly started to flow.
“For whatever reason, I started writing original material and performing every chance I could,” says Harkewicz, who joined UW Department of Medicinal Chemistry as a research scientist in 2012. “I could only describe it as an unexplainable, spiritual thing.”
New to Seattle, Harkewicz began performing at local open mic nights using the stage name Rick McWolfe, under which he recently recorded his first album, The Doors of My Soul.
“Initially, I was unbelievably nervous and shy about the whole ordeal,” he says of his early forays into the Seattle music scene. “As I continued to do it, it got a lot easier and it provided more and more satisfaction.”
Assured of his creative chops, Harkewicz now regularly performs as busker at Pike Place Market.
“It offers me a freedom that is unmatched,” he says of performing his original material outdoors and among people, many of whom he describes as “literally down on their luck and living through hard times.”
You’re most likely to find him playing in his favorite spot, “The Cave,” which he says is “just down the stairs from where they throw the fish.”
“The stairwell acoustics are awesome,” he says. “For me, the street is the greatest stage in the world.”
