Richard Haight was Principle Investigator for a DoE FPACE II contract on earth abundant thin film photovoltaics. His work has involved the development of tunable femtosecond high harmonic photoelectron spectroscopy as a tool for studying electron dynamics in materials. With 2 colleagues he invented the MARS technology- an advanced femtosecond photomask repair tool presently in use at IBM's Burlington, Vt. Mask Manufacturing House that generated >$300M for IBM, was commercialized and is now sold by 2 external companies. This work led to an IBM Corporate Level Outstanding Technical Achievement Award in 2005. This tool can be found at major IC companies around the world. He also developed femtosecond photovoltage spectroscopy used to determine the electronic structure in buried MOS stacks as part of IBM's high-K metal gate program. Femtosecond photovoltage spectroscopy was instrumental in the development of optimal heterojunction structures in earth abundant thin film photovoltaic devices. Haight has served on numerous committees for the NSF, DoE and the National Academy of Sciences Committee on Atomic, Molecular and Optical Sciences (CAMOS). He is a fellow of the American Physical Society and Optical Society of America, edited a published 2 volume set entitled, "Handbook of Instrumentation and Techniques for Semiconductor Nanostructure Characterization", was the senior scientific adviser on World Scientific Press's "Handbook of Energy", and co-authored a book entitled "Industrial Applications of Ultrafast Lasers" in 2018. He holds more than 85 US and international patents with additional patent filings that are pending. Haight has more than 125 publications and book chapters and is co-Editor-in-Chief for the Materials and Energy series published by World Scientific Press. Haight is presently involved in IBM's quantum computation effort, IBMQ, where he is studying qubit materials issues and non-linear optical communications for scaling.
