My current research is focused on the evolution of genes and proteins, using the zooplanktonic chordate Oikopleura dioica as animal model, on three specific biological processes: 1. the impact of gene loss on the evolution of genomes and developmental gene networks, analyzing the retinoid signaling and other signaling pathways with which it interacts; 2. the evolutionary and functional analysis of the interactions between proteins and metals, using the metallothioneins as case study, and the contribution of metallothioneins to the genetic ‘defensome’ that the living beings activate in front of situations of environmental stressors (e.g. heavy metals or microplastics); and 3. the impact of transposable elements and the changes of epigenetics mechanisms on the evolution of chordate genomes.
