Raymond W. Simmonds

Dr. Raymond W. Simmonds attended the University of California, Berkeley where he received a BA degree in Physics in 1995. He did his graduate studies at University of California, Berkeley where he received two degrees in physics: M.S. (1999) and Ph.D. (2002). His thesis research focused on understanding superfluid 3He Josephson weak links and the development of the first superfluid 3He d.c. SQUID. Following his degree, he briefly studied quasiparticle states in high temperature superconductors (BiSrCaCuO) as a post-doctoral researcher in the Physics department at the University of California, Berkeley. In 2002, Dr. Simmonds received an NRC Postdoctoral fellowship to work on superconducting qubits with NIST, Boulder, Co. Dr. Simmonds joined NIST faculty as a Physicist in 2004. Notable achievements include: identified two-level system (TLS) defects in Josephson tunnel barriers within superconducting qubits (2004), demonstrated coupled phase qubits via simultaneous state measurement (2005), demonstrated first quantum bus/memory with superconducting circuits (2007), developed vacuum-gap capacitors (2010), which led to strong-coupling circuit cavity electromechanics (2011).
