Dr. Bharadwaj is a Section Head (Neuropathology) and Research Scientist (Brain single cell Proteomics), at the Lieber Institute, Johns Hopkins Medicine Campus, Baltimore, MD. His graduate thesis focused on characterizing novel epigenetic mechanisms (DNA methylation, histone modifications and 3D chromatin architecture) regulating gene expression in postmortem human brains of schizophrenia subjects. His scientific areas of expertise include brain anatomy, neuropathology, genomics and single cell proteomics in postmortem human brain research. He has the distinction of pioneering the epigenetic approach of ‘Chromosome Conformation Capture – 3C’ in postmortem human brain tissue with high impact lead author publications in Neuron, ‘2014 [84(5): 997-1008] and The Journal of Neuroscience, ‘ 2013 - 33(29): 11839-51 at schizophrenia risk genes NMDAR2B and GAD1 for his doctoral thesis. To broaden his neuroscience understanding, he completed a Training Fellowship in Neuropathology at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, adding neuropathology and neuroanatomy to his expertise with human brain research. On the molecular front, he identifies genetic risk mechanisms to protein associations in the human brain at the cell type level, which is a highly translational approach. He isolates select whole brain cells from human brain tissue using laser capture microdissection (LCM), a technique he is pioneering at the Lieber Institute. He has served as a co-Investigator on a NIHR21 grant focused on the age-associated molecular comparison of brain cell types within the hippocampal to prefrontal circuit in schizophrenia versus control subjects. Dr. Bharadwaj continues to lead scientific research centered on elucidating risk mechanism genes in brain subjects [J Neurosci Res. 2018 Jan;96(1):21-30] and cell-type contributions to Alzheimer’s disease [Acta Neuropathologica’ 137(4): 557-569]. He was recently invited to give a Faculty Course Lecture titled, ‘Epigenetic mechanisms in neurodegenerative diseases’ at the esteemed American Association of Neuropathology Conference, 2020. His research work on dopamine single cell proteomics was chosen for a Scientific Talk at the Wellcome Genome Campus Proteomics in Cell Biology Conference (March 2020). In addition to mainstream scientific publications and grants, he has also authored several book review chapters on the subjects of Epigenetic and Proteomics in human brain research due to his passion for teaching and disseminating knowledge to graduate students.
