My research focuses on the delivery of new smoking cessation interventions in primary care. Although there are effective treatments to help smokers quit for a few weeks, most return to smoking within a year. Interventions designed to prevent relapse are therefore worthwhile but few have proven to be effective.
I am also interested in Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) which is a method of data collection carried out in real-time using hand-held devices. By using EMA methods in our clinical trials we are able to look at smoking behaviour as it happens, to help us understand the reasons why people lapse or go on to relapse at any given moment.
