Henry R. Black, MD, MACP, FASH is a clinical professor of Internal Medicine at the Center for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease, Section of Cardiology, at New York University School of Medicine in New York City. He is the co-author, with William J. Elliott, MD, PhD, of Hypertension: A Companion to Braunwald’s Heart Disease, 2nd Edition. Previously, Dr. Black was the Charles J. and Margaret Roberts Professor of Preventive Medicine and professor of Internal Medicine at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. He served as chairperson of the Department of Preventive Medicine at Rush from 1992 to 2005, and as associate vice president and associate dean for research from 2000 to 2005. Dr. Black joined Rush after nearly 20 years on the faculty at the Yale University School of Medicine. Dr. Black earned his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine in 1967. He completed his training in internal medicine at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and Yale-New Haven Hospital where he served as chief resident in Internal Medicine. Dr. Black is currently the president of the American Society of Hypertension (ASH) and a member of the CardioRenal Advisory Committee of the Food and Drug Administration. Among his other professional activities, Dr. Black was a member of the Executive Committee of the Sixth & Seventh Joint National Committees on the Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure. He has authored more than 370 articles, book chapters, and manuscripts and 200 abstracts focusing on high blood pressure, preventive cardiology, and preventive medicine.
