Roy Weinstein received both the S.B. and Ph.D. degrees in physics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA, USA, and the honorary Sc.D. degree from Lycoming College, Williamsport, PA, USA, in 1951, 1954, and 1983, respectively.
He has specialized at various times in atomic structure, elementary particles, and superconductivity. He served in the U.S. Navy (1945–1946), was an Assistant Professor with Brandeis University, Waltham, MA, USA (1954–1956) and with Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA, USA (1956–1959), Professor and Chairman with Northeastern University, Boston, MA, USA (1960–1982), Professor (1982–2007) and Dean of the College of Natural Sciences, University of Houston, Houston, TX, USA (1982–1988). Dr. Weinstein became a Fellow of the American Physical Society in 1967. He was the recipient of the National Triennial Scholar Prize awarded by Phi Kappa Phi. He was also the recipient of awards in superconductivity for record trapped field, record current density, and “Great Achievements in Superconductivity.” He has received a Guggenheim Fellowship (to Stanford) and two NSF Fellowships (to the Bohr Institute and Harvard).
