Career Trajectory
Bio
My long-term research interests involve the understanding in biological terms of the decision-making process and how this goes together with the development of consciousness in several organisms including of course humans. My academic training and research experience to date have provided me with a strong background in neurobiology (molecular and electrophysiological). Although my interest for neurosciences was already there when I was still undergraduate, I really fall into it after graduation while I started to handle the electrophysiological tools in the lab of Pr. Paul Salin working side by side with Dr. Sylvain Crochet. During this time, I learned electrophysiology the hard way performing chronic recordings of the local field potential from 6 different cortical areas and training myself to analyze these signals. This logically drove me into my four PhD years where I got the unique opportunity to collaborate with Pr. Carl Petersen in Lausanne. We designed a long-term project together with Sylvain Crochet including a sophisticated behavioral task and optogenetic photoinhibition experiments in the head-restricted mouse preparation. The main goal of this project was to understand how sensorimotor transformations are achieved by the brain. Along with giving me the technical and conceptual knowledge required nowadays to perform cutting-edge neuroscience, I developed another set of abilities such as public speaking, literature analysis, animal ethics and scientific writing. This fruitful collaboration recently produced my first accepted first-author publication where we found out the crucial role of the prefrontal cortex and the hippocampus in a simple sensory detection task. I found out fascinating how this higher order cortical area was involved in many different cognitive processes and behaviors and so badly understood. It is driven by this fundamental curiosity that I crossed the path of Marie Carlén while applying for postdocs. With her great knowledge about optogenetic manipulations and her insatiable appetite to unravel the neuronal mechanisms beyond the computational properties of the prefrontal cortex, the alignment of our research goals was instantaneous.
