After gaining 38 years’ experience in the food industry, Peter retired from Cargill in February 2017 and founded his own consultancy firm “DGH-Consulting – Nutrition Innovation”. He provides expert advice in scientific and regulatory affairs, nutrition innovation and food technology to companies and associations in the global food sector.
Peter received his degree in food technology in 1979 at the HAS University of Applied Sciences, after which he fulfilled various R&D leadership roles in multinational corporations. He started as R&D Project Leader for savory snacks at General Mills. In 1985, Peter became R&D Manager at OZF and was responsible for building an R&D organization and pilot facilities for confectionery, fine bakery, chocolate and ice cream. In 1989 Peter moved to DSM as European Technology Manager to lead the development of new pastry and bread ingredients and monitor corporate R&D projects mainly focusing on new food enzymes.
Peter joined Cargill in 1992 as Deputy Manager of the European Food Application Centre. From 1995, he directed for more than 10 years a multidisciplinary team to run all erythritol-related developments, complete its safety database including all pre-clinical and clinical research, achieve regulatory approval in more than 50 countries around the world, coordinate the capital investments needed to start manufacturing and successfully launch erythritol on the global market. In 2006, Peter became Global Nutrition and Regulatory Affairs Manager for Cargill Health & Nutrition. From 2014 until his retirement from Cargill in February 2017 he was Global Nutrition Innovation Leader to develop dietary and personal care solutions for improved Nutrition, Health & Wellness.
During his time in the food industry, Peter was an active member of the International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) Functional Foods Task Force and the Oral & Systemic Health Resilience Expert Group, the Top Institute for Food and Nutrition (TIFN) Oral Health Theme Council, the Calorie Control Council (CCC) Board of Directors, and the European Polyols Association (EPA). He is a regular speaker at international conferences.
